Most employers are now required by law – not just the HSE – to have a detailed written Fire Risk Assessment/Asbestos Register in place and perform other regular duties, including staff training and planning. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005 and the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012 are vigorously enforced and the government has informed business that failure to comply could lead to fines and imprisonment.
And it’s not just smaller companies that are at risk. Even large companies can be found to be deficient on this score – as was seen in the recent court case that fined the retailer New Look £400,000 for failure to take proper fire precautions.
